Golden & Hazy Goodness: 12 Wheat Beers

Get ready for a list of thirst quenching, spot hitting, satisfying, and balanced brews of the season. These wheat beers are golden, hazy, and downright delicious. On tap we have an array of white beers. Mostly witbiers and hefeweizens, but a smattering of wheat ales that stray from the norm in a good way. A very good way. Without further ado please make your way into the haze.

Namaste – Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales

  • Brewery Location: Milton, DE
  • Style: Witbier
  • ABV: 4.8%

Floral, but not bitter. Flavorful, but light and refreshing. This white is brewed with the Witbier staple of oranges, but also with a complement of lemongrass. Namaste is good beer balance, both in taste and in spirit. The word encapsulates the motive of respect and admiration behind this beer. Namaste was first brewed as a tribute to Belgian brewery 3 Fonteinen. Read the story behind this karmic brew on Dogfish’s site.

Golden Spike Hefeweizen – Uinta Brewing Company

  • Brewery Location: Salt Lake City, UT
  • Style: Hefeweizen
  • ABV: 4.0%
  • IBU: 18
  • Availability: Year Round

Dedicated to a momentous piece of Americana, this golden wheat beer shines with a delicate bouquet of strong citrus. It’s luster is balanced with yeast to keep you chugging along with this unfiltered brew. An aftertaste of citrus drives the point home like a stake into the dirt (so many puns…). And I don’t know about you, but I’m a sucker for Uinta’s bottle art. They incorporate fresh designs and intricate compass embossing on their bottles to give you a full package experience.

Dancing Man Wheat – New Glarus Brewing

  • Brewery Location: New Glarus, WI
  • Style: Hefeweizen
  • ABV: 7.2%
  • Availability: Spring

First off, I apologize to my readers outside the great dairy state of Wisconsin. For you may not be able to enjoy the splendor of this true hefeweizen. But this brew, among many others from New Glarus, is definitely worth the trip into the upper Midwest. This full flavored, hazy batch of deliciousness is fermented in bottle and has banana and bubblegum yeast notes paired with citrus, clove, and a hint of cinnamon. After the unfiltered wheat hits your lips it travels down to your feet and urges you to get up and dance. Dance bravely. Become the dancing man/woman.

Monkey Boy – East End Brewing Company

  • Brewery Location: Pittsburgh, PA
  • Style: Hefeweizen
  • ABV: 5.0%
  • Availability: Year Round

German yeast gives this crisp hefeweizen a forward banana taste without actually brewing with bananas. Thus, this brew is aptly named for its ape pleasing characteristics. Unlike peeling a fresh nanner this brew finishes off with a tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Belgian White – Yellowhammer Brewing

  • Brewery Location: Huntsville, AL
  • Style: Witbier
  • ABV: 4.8%
  • Availability: Year Round

Yellowhammer brews a vast variety of seasonals and small batch brews throughout the year, but their Belgian White is one of the lucky three to be a year round treat. It’s an homage to the Belgian Wit, but with Yellowhammer’s unique stamp. Traditional citrus and spice notes are achieved by using oranges and coriander, but this flagship brew subs out the norm for a much welcome zest from Kaffir lime leaves and ginger. A great refresher as the weather grows warmer.

Bearded Lady – Good People Brewing Company

  • Brewery Location: Birmingham, AL
  • Style: American Wheat Ale
  • ABV: 4.2%
  • Availability: Year Round

Experience the spectacle without visiting the circus! This tart take on a wheat ale is best put by Good People: “Light bodied! Full beered!” It is refreshing with a small nudge from its citrus flavor. Rain or shine, stubble or beard this beer is an easy drinking hot weather fixer elixir.

Blood Orange Wheat – Full Sail Brewing Company

  • Brewery Location: Hood River, OR
  • Style: American Wheat Ale
  • ABV: 5.2%
  • IBU: 23

Deemed “A Refreshing Wheat Beer with a Twist”, the twist uses a more fruity citrus than the traditional orange. Blood oranges’ berry characteristics complements the malt beautifully and offers a refreshing wheat finish that put wind in your sails (Yes, I went there). Apart from making spectacular brews, FS makes spectacular advances in sustainable brewing. One of the most impressive? They have one of the lowest water use to beer production ratios in the brewing industry. Read how they do it and about how they are working to protect our environment here.

Great White – Lost Coast Brewery

  • Brewery Location: Eureka, CA
  • Style: Witbier
  • ABV: 4.8%
  • Availability: Year Round

Although there is a burly shark on the label, the beefy & bitey surfer motif does not translate to the light nectar that lies within. Great White is light, crisp, and refreshing. The light citrus and “crystal clear mountain water” ensure this brew is a great sipper and great session beer. But it is too bad a sixer doesn’t come with this bad ass tap handle.

DreamWeaver Wheat – Tröegs Independent Brewing

  • Brewery Location: Hershey, PA
  • Style: Hefeweizen
  • ABV: 4.8%
  • IBU: 15
  • Availability: Year Round

Dreams are best left free to roam. Without a ceiling. Troeg brews this dream using open top fermentation which allows for the spice character to shine through. Exposing the fermenting krausen to oxygen brings forth the spicy clove and a little black pepper. The practice also ensures that the fruit notes the brewers brew with come through to balance that dreamy hazy goodness.

UFO White – Harpoon Brewery

  • Brewery Location: Boston, MA
  • Style: Witbier
  • ABV: 4.8%
  • IBU: 11
  • Availability: Year Round

This white is part of Harpoon’s UnFilterd Offering and it is a worthy offering indeed. Hand-ground spices make for an otherworldly encounter. Being a white, this brew is made with the tried and true orange peel and coriander ingredients, but is a little sweeter and lighter than many in the category.
